Tibetan Culture through the Eyes of a Modern Lama

New course begins March 23rd!

Description: Do you want to learn about Tibetan history, literature, art, and philosophy? This course will offer unique insight into these topics and other aspects of Tibetan culture through the writings of Gendün Chöphel, the founder of modern Tibetan thought and art. Gendün Chöphel (1903-51) is a hero of contemporary Tibetans because of his completely original views on Tibetan culture, society, and the future of his people. Western scholars consider him “the most innovative Tibetan author of the twentieth century.” Fortunately, most of his brilliant writings have been translated into English. In this course, we will study five topics about modern Tibet, with Gendün Chöphel as our guide: history, literature, the visual arts, debates about religion and science, and the encounter between Buddhism and the West. The course will meet once a week for a 2.5-hour lecture and discussion. The reading load will be moderate, but fascinating. Instructor: Jann Ronis

Cost: $180

Schedule: Thursdays, 6:30 – 9:00 PM

Start Date: March 23, 2017
